The objectives of a study by Skjelbo et al. were to examine (a) the relationship between Chloroguanide metabolism and efficacy in malaria prophylaxis and (b) the mephenytoin metabolism and its relationship to chloroguanide metabolism among Tanzanians. From information provided by urine specimens from the 216 subjects, the investigators computed the ratio of unchanged S-mephenytoin to R-mephenytoin (S/R ratio). The results were as follows:

(b) The investigators defined as poor metabolizers of mephenytoin any subject with an S/R mephenytoin ratio greater than .9. How many and what percentage of the subjects were poor metabolizers?
(c) How many and what percentage of the subjects had ratios less than .7? Between .3 and .6999 inclusive?

Solutions

Expert Solution

b) By observing the data, no any observation is greater than 0.9 S/R ratio. Hence 0% of subjects were poor metabolizers.

c) All are observaion has ratio less than 0.7 and hence 100% of subjects had ratio less than 0.7.

56 observations are lies in between 0.3 and 0.6999 and hence 29.17% of subjects had these ratio.

I have attached the image in which all calculations are carried out. Frequency of each observation is obtain using pivot table such as on row all the unique observations and on column count of each unique observation.

Cantor et al. (1988) reported a study of the relationship between the regular use of hair dye and the development of leukemia. The study entailed 577 leukemia patients and 1245 persons free from the disease (controls) who were questioned concerning their use of hair dye. Forty-three patients and 55 controls claimed to have had significant exposure to hair dye. a. Carry out the chi-square test of significance to test hair dye use (rate) differences between cases and control. b. Is...

In the Brown et al. (2013): Case Study - Whose Body? (p. 256) by Timothy B. Patrick, Peter J. Tonellato, & Mark A. Hoffman, which perspective presented in the case do you agree with? Are there cases of advances in medical knowledge that do not, at least potentially, threaten to violate the privacy of individual patients? What moral, ethical, and legal protocols can be considered in guiding clinicians in this case? Next, in guiding researchers in this case? This...

2) The purpose of a study by Tem et al (A-15) was to investigate the wheelchair maneuvering in individuals with lower-level spinal cord injury (SCI) and health controls. Subject used a modified wheelchair to incoporate a rigid seat surface to facilitate the specified experimental measurements.Interface pressure measurement was recorded by using a high -resolution pressure-sensitive mat with a spatial resolution of 4 sensors per square centimeter taped on the rigid seat support. During static sitting conditions, average pressures were recorded...

A current study by Yang et al. is investigating the rate of false negatives in patients you have COVID-19. In their study, nasal swabs were used on patients known to have COVID-19. Of those 219 swabs, 61 of the tests came back with a false negative. Make a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of all nasal swabs that would return a false negative for people with COVID-19.  Please show all 5 steps, specifically step #3.

A study by Bechtel et al., 2009, described in the Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health considered polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and immune system function in beef cattle. Some cattle were near major oil- and gas-producing areas of western Canada. The mean monthly exposure to PM1.0 (particulate matter that is <1μm in diameter) was approximately 7.2 μg/m3 with standard deviation 1.5. Assume that the monthly exposure is normally distributed. a.
