J Morton et al examined gallbladder function before and after fundoplication - a surgery used to stop stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus (acid reflux) - in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.  The authors measured gallbladder functionality by calculating the gallbladder ejection fraction (GBEF) before and after fundoplication for 12 patients.  The goal of fundoplication is to increase GBEF, which is measured as a percent.  The data are shown below.  Can we conclude that fundoplication increases GBEF functioning?  Construct a 95% confidence interval.

For the score differences, we have

(1) Null and Alternative Hypotheses

The following null and alternative hypotheses need to be tested:

Ho:

Ha:

This corresponds to a left-tailed test, for which a t-test for two paired samples be used.

(2) Rejection Region

Based on the information provided, the significance level is α=0.05, and the degrees of freedom are df=11.

Hence, it is found that the critical value for this left-tailed test is tc=−1.796, for α=0.05 and df = 11

The rejection region for this left-tailed test is

(3) Test Statistics

The t-statistic is computed as shown in the following formula:

(4) The decision about the null hypothesis

Since it is observed that t=−1.98<tc=−1.796, it is then concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected.

Using the P-value approach: The p-value is p=0.0366, and since p=0.0366<0.05, it is concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected.

(5) Conclusion

It is concluded that the null hypothesis Ho is rejected. Therefore, there is enough evidence to claim that the population mean μ1 is less than μ2, at the 0.05 significance level. Therefore we can conclude that fundoplication increases GBEF functioning.

Confidence interval

The 95% confidence interval is calculated as:

A 2007 study of women in Miami (Brewer et al., Ann Epidemiol. 17:533-539) examined the link between HIV status and high-risk sexual activity. Eligible participants were female, at least 18 years of age, English-speaking, self-reported having vaginal or anal sex in the past 30 days, and self-reported having smoked crack or snorted or injected cocaine or heroin in the last 30 days and having not been in drug treatment in the last 30 days. Hobbis et al (Inorg. Chem., 2019, 58 (3), pp 1826–1833) thoroughly examined the properties of a niobium-iron-antimony semiconductor material. Although their reported synthetic procedure was a fairly straightforward stoichiometric melting and subsequent crystallization of the pure elements, they did not observe the predicted behavior of an intrinsic semiconductor. Instead, their compound was found to exhibit characteristics of a very lightly n-doped semiconductor instead. They hypothesize that this is due to the formation of so-called “antiphase domains” during crystallization, where the...

5.2.5 Researchers Wilt et al. (New England Journal of Medicine, 2012) investigated whether surgery, compared to just observation, was (more) effective in improving men’s survival chances after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The researchers identified 731 men with localized prostate cancer who volunteered to participate. They randomly assigned 364 men to surgery and the remaining 367 to observation. All participants were followed for about 10 years. In those 10 years, 21 surgery recipients died of prostate cancer related reasons compared...

Normalization in their level of serum-ionized calcium was achieved by 7 of the 15 prednisolone-treated patients and by 0 of the 15 patients in the control group.
