Which statistical test should I use if I want to know if two values are close to one another?
For example, the average time for birds at a birdfeeder are 53.52 sec compared to those who stay in the surrounding branches (52.81 sec)
I don't know if there is an applicable test I can apply for two simple variables. Thanks !
There are multiple tests applicable through which you can compare means, like for the example that you mentioned: "the average time for birds at a birdfeeder are 53.52 sec compared to those who stay in the surrounding branches (52.81 sec)". The only consideration while deciding which test to use will depend upon the level of information provided and the assumptions used:
1. If sample standard deviation is provided for both the samples and the count is >=30 for both samples:
Use t-test for two independent samples
2. If population standard deviation is provided for both the samples and the count is >=30 for both samples:
Use Z-test for two independent samples
3. If only averages are provided
You can at best calculate the % difference at best. Without more information(standard deviation, counts), it will not be possible to apply any statistical test.
Hope that answers your question!
