1. Two parallel cables are separated a distance of 3 cm in a length of 10 cm. One cable carries a current of 2 A and the other 3 A. Calculate the force between the two cables. If the currents in the cables have the same direction, will the cables tend to separate or join? Make a diagram.
We have learned about the existence of a magnetic field due to a current carrying conductor and the Biot – Savart’s law and also learned that an external magnetic field exerts a force on a current-carrying conductor and the Lorentz force formula that governs this principle Thus, from the two studies, we can say that any two current carrying conductors when placed near each other, will exert a magnetic force on each other.
The given situation can be represented as,
Hence the cables join together
