Each of the following compounds has a nitrogen - nitrogen bond: N2, N2H4, N2F2. match each compound with one of the following bond lengths;110 PM, 122 PM, 145 PM. describe the geometry about one of the N atoms in each compound. what hybrid orbitials are needed to describe the bonding in valancer bond theory
The N-N bond length for N2=110 pm, N2H4=145 pm and
N2F2=122 PM.
=> Whatever the electronic structure of dinitrogen, its structure must be linear, as it is composed of two atoms bound together by strong chemical bonds.
=> Based on VSEPR Theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory) the electron clouds on the atoms (and lone pair) around the N will repel each other. As a result they will be pushed apart giving the trigonal pyramidal molecule a bent molecular geometry or shape.
=> As we saw trigonal planar arrangements in N2F2, the nitrogen atoms are sp2-hybridized! The fluorine atoms are sp3-hybridized, since they carry three lone pairs of electrons each, and are bound to one atom only.
