Hydrazine, N2H4, may react with oxygen to form nitrogen gas and water. If 2.15g of N2H4 reacts and produces 0.550L of N2, at 295K and 1.00 atm, what is the percent yield of the reaction?

Solutions

Expert Solution

N2H4 + O2 --------------> N2 + 2H2O

1 moles of N2H4 react with O2 to gives N2

32g of N2H4 react with O2 to gives 28g of N2

2.15g of N2H4 react with O2 to gives = 28*2.15/32   = 1.88g of N2

PV = nRT

n = W/M

PV   = WRT/M

W   = PVM/RT

        = 1*0.55*28/0.0821*295   = 0.635g

actual yiled   = 0.635g

Theoritical yield = 1.88g

percentage yield   = actual yield*100/theoritical yield

                             = 0.635*100/1.88    = 33.77%
