Discuss the design, construction and installation of both solid and oil-filled high voltage cablee, and describe the techniques which may be used to minimise sheath losses in such cables. Indicate the limitations of conventional cables for bulk power transmission.
The solid filled high voltage cables do not have good impregnation. However, in case of oil-filled cables impregnation is even possible before or after sheathing. Solid cables do have formation of voids, while this is not in case of oil-filled cables. Moreover, oil filled cables are a good indicator in case there is any defect in the cable, as the leaking oil gives us the indication about the defect in the cable. Oil filled cables are favourable in case of long distance power transmission where solid cables are not practical to be used, like in oceans.
Limitations of conventional cables for bulk power transmission is that there are huge eddy current losses and losses due to Joule's heating ( losses).
