Functions of the Brain
Psychologists often state that the cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that makes us uniquely human. In a detailed response, explain whether or not you agree or disagree with this statement. Be sure to mention some of the specific functions of the cerebral cortex in detail that would justify or dispute this statement.
The higher order functions of the human beings such as, thinking, creativity, intelligence etc. are felicitated by cerebral cortex. It is one of the largest structures in the brain that is spread across both the right and left hemispheres. In order to make the functions better and efficient, Cerebral Cortex has four lobes such as frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe and temporal lobe.
Frontal lobe looks after the reasoning, emotions, problem solving and parts of speech which are more unique functions of the human beings. Parietal lobe receives and organizes stimuli and Occipital lobe processes visual stimuli. Temporal lobe is mostly occupied with auditory stimuli but it also takes care of memory and speech along with the frontal lobe. Of all the lobes, frontal lobe which looks after emotions, speech, reasoning, language, memory makes human beings very unique and special of all the creatures. It’s not about the size of the brain but it’s about the functions that make the brain special.
