In a certain hospital ER the average amount of patients that enter in a 15 minute interval is 3.6. If each 15 minute interval is independent of one another, and the amount of patients that show up in one 15 minute interval does not influence or change the number of patients that show up in any other 15 minute interval. Arrivals occur smoothly throughout each 15 minute interval. Answer the following questions:

A.            What is the probability that at most 2 patients will show up in a 15 minute interval?

B.            What would be your new mean, if we were to use this information to figure out probabilities during a 5 minute interval?

C.            Using the new mean in part B, what is the probability that more than 1 patient will show up in a 5 minute interval?

Patients arrive at the emergency room of Costa Val- ley Hospital at an average of 5 per day. The demand for emergency room treatment at Costa Valley fol- lows a Poisson distribution. Operating Room The hospital has to allocate a certain amount of operating room (OR) time to specific cardiac procedures. Since the actual procedure time in the OR is random and will - in the best of all cases - vary around the expected procedure time, some procedures will exceed the forecasted durations while others will be completed ahead of schedule. If the hospital reserves too much time to a case, the OR is likely to incur excessive idle time. If,...

Patients recovering from an appendix operation normally spend an average of 6.3 days in the hospital. The distribution of recovery times is normal with a σ = 2.2 days. The hospital is trying a new recovery program designed to lessen the time patients spend in the hospital. The first 25 appendix patients in this new program were released from the hospital in an average of 5.5 days. On the basis of these data, can the hospital conclude that the new...
