The uncanny and often unknown relation between Haiti and the United States is of historic significance for understanding the history of the United States itself as the current US territory extending from the borders with Canada in the north to the New Orleans in the south Owes its existence to the indirect influence of the Haitian revolution of the early 19 th century. Back then, this stretch of the New World was a French colony. The French counsel under Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to sell this land because for more than a decade it as failed to control the slave revolution in the its French colony of Haiti. Thus, in 1804, under a treaty beteeen the French Counsel and the then President Thomas Jefferson, the White House gained control of the North American territory extending from the Canadian border to the delta and the New Orleans. Thus in a way, the rebellion of Haiti created the United States as it exists today.
