A professional league like NFL has put in place a systematic process that ensures that athletes are protected against signing up with a shady agent. NFL regulates the agents by the players’ unions. The union has the legal authority, the incentives and the resources which enable it to develop the regulatory competence that is so much required and so much needed to improve the quality of agent representation.
NFL specifies that no person, except the player representing himself, will be allowed to conduct individual contract negotiations on behalf of a player. It also specifies that no person, except the player representing himself, will provide any form of assistance or any advice with regards to such negotiations. Assistance and advice can only be provided by a person who is currently certified as a Contract Advisor, who has signed a Standard Representation Agreement with the concerned athlete, and who files a fully executed copy of the Standard Representation Agreement with the professional league.
Thus an agent regulation system is in place and only the league certified agents can become the exclusive bargaining agents for the athletes. This system assures that athletes are protected against signing up with a shady agent.
