CHEM 114 ‐ Lab Experiment 8 Equilibrium II – Le Chatelier’s Principle
2. There is chemical waste that must be disposed of properly in this lab. Identify which wastes are highly hazardous and explain why they must be properly discarded.
In experiment Le Chatelier's principle the waste highly hazardous and properly discarded chemical used are
A) 12M HCl: It is very strong acid highly corrosive and cause burns if they come in contact with skin. It should be properly discarded by neutralising with Sodium bicarbonate. Add sodium bicarbonate with lots of water. To this add the HCl slowly . Wait for neutalization reaction most likely fizzing. Let it stop then it can be diluted with water and flushed down to the sink. Let it drain with large quantity of water.
Other waste generated in the experiment are not that hazardous, still waste solutions can be flushed down the sink with large quantity of water. Failing to neutralize the waste solution may result in acid/base reaction in the sink or U-bend.
