Why is edge dislocation faster than screw dislocation?

Why is edge dislocation faster than screw dislocation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Edge dislocation is faster than Screw dislocation due to associated shear stress (distortion) in case of Screw dislocation.

Berger vector indicates the direction of dislocation w.r.to slip plane. it is perpendicular to dislocation line in case of edge dislocation and parallel to dislocation line in Screw dislocation.

Helix or Spiral structure is formed in case of screw dislocation and shear stress is associated with atoms adjacent to dislocation region. This consumes more energy in compare to edge dislocation. it means less energy is required in edge dislocation than screw dislocation. Hence, edge dislocation is faster than screw disloaction.

Dislocation in metals Describe edge dislocation motion in metals from an atomic perspective. Be sure to clearly illustrate the sequence in which bonds are broken and reformed. Also from an atomic perspective, describe how macroscopic plastic deformation occurs by the motion of dislocations in response to an applied stress. Again, use words and visuals to explain.

Consider a straight screw dislocation parallel to a rigid surface, constrained not to deform. Show that the screw is repelled from the surface by a force equivalent to an image dislocation of the same sign and magnitude. (This example is relevant to the situation of a dislocation near a surface with a hard oxide layer upon it.)
