Find the​ P-value that corresponds to the given standard​ score, and determine whether to reject the null hypothesis at the 0.10 significance level. Is the alternative hypothesis​ supported?

z equals 1.2 for Upper H 0​: mu equals 150 pounds and Upper H Subscript a​: mu not equals 150 pounds. Could some one explain this as if you were trying to explain to a baby. this is over my head...completely

Hypothesis testing involves five steps

  • Writing the Null and Alternate hypothesis
  • Calculating the test statistic, Z or t value
  • Find the rejection/or p-value based on the significance level
  • Decision (Reject or Fail to reject Null) (If p-value < significance level, we reject null)
  • Conclusion

Here in this problem. We know the test statistic z = 1.2. We need to find the p-value

  • p-value basically measures how much evidence we have against our said Null hypothesis
  • P-value can be calculated using a standard normal table or using Excel or any scientific calculator
  • To calculate p-value we need the type of test (tail), and a test statistic
  • We identify the tail of the test using the inequality sign in the alternate hypothesis. If the alternate hypothesis has not equal sign, it is a two-tailed test. Otherwise, it is a single-tailed test

For test statistic = 1.2, and it is a two-tailed test.

p-value is 0.230

Since p-value (0.230) > alpha (0.1), We fail to reject Null hypothesis
