synthesize 3-benzyl-2-phenylhexanal using an aldol condensation followed by conjugate addition of a gilman reagent

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer

From the aldol condensation followed by a conjugate addition of a Gilman reagent there is need to synthesis of 3-benzyl-2-phenylhexanal

In the aldol condensation there is formed ?, ? unsaturated carbonyl compound when two carbonyl compound reacted to each other in presence of strong base.

When we reacting the two molecules of 2-phenylacetaldehyde in presence of base so there is formed (Z)-2,3-diphenylacrylaldehyde.

When Gilman reagent is reacting with (Z)-2,3-diphenylacrylaldehyde reacting then there is formed 3-benzyl-2-phenylhexanal. Gilman reagent is the combination of Li and Cu reagent. So when we reacted Gilman reagent (CH3CH2CH2)2CuLi with (Z)-2,3-diphenylacrylaldehyde in presence of acid then there is added propyl group to 1,2 to ?, ? unsaturated carbonyls and formed 3-benzyl-2-phenylhexanal as follow –
