The ways that shippers and carriers can lessen the
adverse effects on the environment are as follows:
- LNG is a technology that is cleaner and cheaper than diesel can
be used. This technology requires a global infrastructure and is
mostly useful for short-term shippment.
- Synthetic fuels and biofuels can be replaced with current fuels
and hydrogen can be used for marine propulsion.
- There should be IMO emission regulations and cleaner standards
for the release of sulphur through combustion of marine fuel.
Sulphur content needs to be reduced.
- Scrubbers can be installed that can be used for exhaust-gas
cleaning over the ships.
Smart-Way Transport Program implemented by the E.P.A
includes the following:
- This program help companies in advancing their supply chain
sustainability by benchmarking, measuring and increasing efficiency
of freight transportation.
- This program gives you a comprehensive system for documenting
information about freight emissions and fuel used across supply
chain. This information can also be shared and tracked across
supply chain.
- This program helps in identifying and selecting transport
modes, freight carriers, operational strategies and equipments that
are more efficient and will help to improve sustainability in
supply chain.
- It helps in streamlining shipping operations that will help in
using less fuel and in turn generate less air pollution.
- This program is supported by all major environmental groups,
international agencies, transportation industry association,
corporate community and state/local governments.
