Looking for ways to determine chemical structure from a nmr and IR chart

Solutions

Expert Solution

NMR and IR spectroscopy are very useful to determine the chemical structure of any chemical compound. IR spectroscopy is best technique to determine the functional group. So, for any unknown compound first of all you should record the IR Spectra to get the functioal group present in your compound. You can record IR spectra for solid as well as liquid samples. After confirmation of functional group you should check the solubility of your compound for liquid NMR. You can record solid state NMR also. Further you can dissolve your sample in particular NMR solvent. Now you can submit for NMR analysis either in 400 MHz or in 600 MHz spectrometer. After finishing the experiment you can open that file in Mestrnova software and you can solve your spectra with help of chemical shift values. Finally you get all the protons and carbons are characterised by NMR spectroscopy and all the functioal group confirm the IR spectroscopy. Now you can easily confirm chemical structure of your compound.
