How would you measure the insect biodiversity of the lesser prairie-chicken habitat? Explain your steps.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The following are the steps in measuring the insect biodiversity.

Objective of the study

  • The objective of the study should be clear and it should also be oriented in social, wide spatial and temporal contexts.

Background information

  • Present and past knoweldge about the species should be necessary for the meaurement.

Plan of the study

  • The idea of the study should be clear . The plan must be detailed , so that the project is not completed earlier without necessary measurements.
  • The funding and personnel availability should be ensured before starting the project.

Degree of examination in detail

  • The insects found should be examined properly and placed in separate groups.
  • Species are grouped relative to size, feeding habits etc..
  • Grouping of insects under same species is improper.

Site selection for the study

  • The sites should be properly selected based on the study .
  • If the habitat needs forests , then sites with such habitat alone can be selected.
  • But here , in Lesser prairie chicken , the habitat is not forests and these chickens will be in shrubs. So insect diversity should be measured in such sites.

Selection of Taxa

  • Inorder to m easure the species biodiversity , it is important to follow taxa .
  • Because without certain order, it is impossible to measure the species.
  • Depending on size, feeding habits, dispersal ability etc . insects should be divided.

Study Duration

  • It is impossible to collect the deatils of biodiversity in short span .
  • But at the same time there should be some frame work about the study duration.

Sampling methods

  • The sampling methods should be cost effective and also reliable.
  • Once sampling methods are selected it should be properly executed.

Identification and data management

  • The selected must be identified reliably and it takes time because it is a difficult task.
  • The identified samples are noted carefully and the data should be maintained well.

Publication of information

  • After successful completion of the project , the results should be properly reviewd before publication.

Also define what are the social marginal costs of abatement and explain why they would increase with increased abatement.
