You get a phone call that changes your life: your child or a relative's child has in a car accident. He has been taken to the hospital, but is unable to move his legs. Many times, having as much knowledge as possible on a medical topic better prepared you to talk to medical professionals. This is we will dig deeper into learning about our body systems. this discussion i will explore spinal cord injuries and their prognoses. You will need to conduct research and document evidence.

1. Describe the process of nerve healing in peripheral nerves and the difference between central and peripheral nerves.
2. Explain how the nervous system grows with us and how that supports it's function.
3. Suggest a reason why most neurons are amitotic.
4. Explain why neurons very rarely become cancerous.
5. Express how the symptoms mentioned in the letter demonstrate the connection between anatomy and physiology, based on injury location.
6. Provide insight into new research, perhaps with stem cells, and describe why specific new research may , or may not , be the answer to cure these injuries.
7. Discuss why medical professional should never guarantee an outcome with a nervous tissue injury.

Expert Solution

1- After injury axon of peripheral nerves can undergoes regeneration due to wallerian degeneration after disconnecting from cell body , this helps in fragmentation of axon. The main difference between central nervous system and peripheral nervous system is that CNS includes Brain and spinal cord whereas PNS includes all the nerves which branches out from CNS and connect other organs.

2 - Growth of nervous system starts with the formation or growth of dendrites and axons towards the target cells which further forms synaptic junction with the target cells. The syanpis and growth of nerves helps in proper transmission of information from Brain to target cells for control.

3 - Most of neurons are amitotic as these can not divide by mitosis due to the differentiation and absence of required organelles.

4 - As neurons are amitotic due to the absence of required organelles and division factors hence the chance of cancer is also low for neurons.

5 - According to symptoms given there is loss or degeneration of connection between PNS and target cells or organs. Here the change in physiology due to inactivity of organs in degeneration of nerves also leads to change of damage in anatomical structures.

6- Neural stem cell therapy can be used for damage of peripheral nervous system as stem cell can be transformed into nerves, oligodendrocytes, astrocytes and even schwann cells which can help in regeneration of nerves.

7 - Doctors can not give guarantee for complete treatment of such conditions as neurons are amitotic and complete regeneration is not possible even by stem cell therapy.

During your visit to the doctor you learn that your child has a rare disorder. The prognosis is not good. But there are two possibilities for treatment: 1) cloning your child which will give a 100% new start or 2) starting your child on an experimental drug that has significant side effects and has not shown much efficacy for recovery. Do the research on a rare disorder in children with either of the two possible treatment and cite the source
