Discuss one disease condition you think is particularly prevalent in the USVI

Hepatitis A or typhoid, or rabies or hepatitis b are prevalent in the US Virgin Islands. The disease condition taken in this case is typhoid.

Typhoid:

Typhoid Is caused by Salmonella typhi. This infection generally occurs due to being passed through contaminated drinking water as well as food. IT might also be passed through the asymptomatic individuals, who are not aware that they are carrying the disease.

This condition could be improved as there would be an increase in the degradation of sanitary conditions in an area. He symptoms presented by this disease would be high fever along with gastrointestinal problems. Without treatment, the disease could be fatal. The bacteria would be entering the body through the mouth and would be present in the intestinefor some weeks probably 1-3. It would be spreading to other tissues as well as organs, via the blood.

Treatment is done through antibiotic treatment. Most commonly used is ciprofloxacin.

Health condition could be improved by:

  • Improving sanitary conditions
  • Providing clean water
  • Avoiding raw fruits and washing them before eating.

Also, vaccination would be helping to prevent the condition.

Considering the ‘causal web’ associated with disease transmission and health outcomes, discuss the importance of different levels of prevention (i.e., primary, secondary, tertiary) used in global/public health strategies for addressing risk factors for specific diseases or health issues. How might these strategies impact one of the health transitions (e.g., demographic, epidemiologic, or nutrition) at the population level? Be specific use examples to support your response.
