Morphology of poliovirus-
Poliovirus is a virus from the genus
Enterovirus and from the family
Picornaviridae.
It is a spherical and enveloped virus. It has a diameter of 25-30
nm. The capsid of the virus is composed of 60 protomers which are
made up of 4 virion proteins namely VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4 which
are arranged in icosahedral symmetry.
The VP1, VP2, and VP3 together form the outer face of the viral
capsid and the VP4 forms the capsid wall inside.
These virion proteins are intermixed in such a way that it creates
loops that serve as an attachment site for corresponding
antibodies.
The VP1 coat protein faces outside and creates a star-shaped flat
surface or "mesa". Surrounding that is a "deep canyon" where the
receptors bind. VP1 has antigenic sites for specific neutralizing
antibodies for each serotype.
