Explain in what ways organized crime investigations can encroach on the personal freedoms of U.S. citizens and outline the specific freedoms in jeopardy. If you were in charge of conducting such investigations, what would you do differently, and why?
There are different ways that these
investigations can encroach the personal freedom. The first way is
the taping of phones, reading, recording of mails and other
communication. It puts a vigil upon the freedom of expression that
is a personal freedom. The second way is the tracking of the
individuals, even in their residence using satellite based
technologies, drones and in other ways. It encroaches the right to
privacy that is granted as personal freedom to the individuals in
the USA. The third way is the prohibition of the religious
practices at places that can attract a huge gathering of people of
a particular religion in the name of prevention of organized crime.
It encroaches the right to practice religion that is granted as
personal freedom.
If I am In-charge of the investigation, I will carry the
investigation, but with a different approach. My approach will be
not to harass those who are not the part of organized crime. In the
name of investigation, there is no need to harass innocent people.
Hence, the scope of investigation, will involve a relatively less
number of people for investigation. The second approach will be to
maintain the high security and integrity to the data that is
collected from the individuals. It should also be acknowledged by
my team members regarding the safety, security and privacy of data.
It will help the people to cooperate and have more confidence in
the investigation. Further, they will disclose more information and
help the investigation to be successful.
