what impact has the global covid 19 pandemic had on urban planning in ghana
Based on historical responses for solving epidemics, there has often been racial segregation which has led to poor areas being allocated for poor citizens and least affected areas being allocated for high income earners. Led by the global Covid 19 pandemic, the same pattern is being feared where urban planning can be been as being greatly influenced by outbreaks of disease.
All these aspects are still prevalent in urban planning especially when there is an outbreak and the most impacted area is converted for government purposes. Now the urban planners are focusing on using the pandemic in order to transform and improve metropolitan areas in Ghana. Earlier urban planning was more focused on as a means for structural and cultural isolation which increased segregation based on socioeconomic conditions.
Now, urban planning protocols are being set after the pandemic to restrict overcrowding in major cities. There is focus being given on consolidation of existing infrastructural sectors that there should be a lack of overconcentration of investments in just one area of the city. As during the health crisis and increased interconnection of supply chains, all areas are affected, urban planners are increasingly focusing on adjoining areas for development so that there is limited inequity between resources and overcrowding is avoided in major city centers when surrounding areas are developed.
