A company advertises that the mean diameter of pipes is 3 inches however, a consumer agency believes that the mean diameter of these pipes is larger. A random sample of N = 36 pipes is taken and it is found the the sample mean diameter is 3.15 inches with a sample standard deviation of S = .2 inches. Test this hypothesis at 95% significance level. Your conclusion is:

Fail to reject the null

Reject the null

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution :

Given that,

Population mean = = 3

Sample mean = = 3.15

Sample standard deviation = s = 0.2

Sample size = n = 36

Level of significance = = 0.05

This is a left (One) tailed test,

The null and alternative hypothesis is,

Ho: 3

Ha: 3

The test statistics,

t = ( - )/ (s/)

= ( 3.15 - 3 ) / ( 0.2 /36 )

= 4.5

P- Value = 0.000

The p-value is p =0.00 < 0.05, it is concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected.

Reject the null hypothesis.

The existing record shows machine bearing has a mean diameter of 0.6 inches. Bearing diameter is known to be normally distributed with standard deviation σ = 0.1 inches. (Additional note: If the mean diameter of bearings is larger or smaller than 0.6 inches, then the process is out of control and must be adjusted.) A random sample of 60 bearings are selected, and the average diameter of the bearing from this sample is 0.55 inches. Use α=0.02 to test the...

A consumer advocate agency wants to find the mean repair cost of a washing machine. As part of the study 40 repair costs were selected and the mean repair cost was determined to be $150.00. From past studies the agency assumes that σ = $21. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the population mean. (Round confidence interval values to two decimal places.)

Crude oil of density 970 kg.m-3 flows in a pipe of internal diameter 9 inches and circular section that exhibits a 90° bend in the horizontal plane. The flowrate of the oil is 11,000 litres per minute. Calculate the force imparted by the oil on the bend due to the change of momentum of the fluid, and draw a diagram to indicate the direction of this force.
