Water molecules do NOT:

a. Form hydrogen bonds with other polar substances

b. Form transient hydrogen bonds with each other in a liquid

c. Form covalent bonds linking them together in ice

d. Separate the ionic bond partners into individual ions.

Solutions

Expert Solution

C. Form covalent bonds linking them together in ice

  • Water is H2O and 1 molecule of water is formed between 1 oxygen atom and 2 hydrogen atom by covalent bonding. Oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen therefore it pulls lone pair of electrons towards itself and this makes hydrogen partially positive. This leads to formation of hydrogen bond between water molecules.
  • Water is polar solvent and therefore all polar molecules are dissolvable in water. This also enables it to break ionic bonds
