Substance C is formed at 600K from A and B according to the reaction below:

A + B -> C

A 0.500 L pressure vessel is loaded with 0.350 mol of A and 0.350 mol of B. What are the concentrations of all three substances at equilibrium, Kc=4.95 at 600K?

Solutions

Expert Solution

molarity of A = B = moles / volume

                         = 0.350 / 0.500

                         = 0.70

A       +    B --------------------> C

0.7        0.7                         0 ---------------> initial

0.7-x    0.7-x                      x ------------------> equilirium

Kc = [C]/ [A][B]

4.95 = x / (0.7-x )^2

( x^2 + 0.49 -1.4 x ) 4.95   = x

4.95 x^2 - 7.93 x   + 2.43 = 0

x = 0.413

equilibrium concentrations :

[A ] = 0.287 M

[B] = 0.287 M

[C ] = 0.413 M
