What are the two hypotheses supporting low-carbohydrate-high-protein diets as an effective weight losing strategy?
Our body main fuel comes from carbohydrates, fat and protein in the form of calories. Glycogen is the main storage form of glucose in body muscle. Each gram of glycogen approximately requires 2 grams of water which will order to be deposited in the muscle tissue. Low carbohydrate intake actually results in the glycogen storage for the depletion of the muscle tissue.
In the absence of glycogen, the water is not at all needed and is basically excreted somehow in the urine. Therefore, the majority of early loss of the weight is due to high protein diets which are from the water loss. After returning to a balanced diet, the weight lost from water will return. This is basically because of the muscle tissue’s ability to store the glycogen and the also the associated water which is necessary for glycogen storage once carbohydrates are returned to the diet.
There are a number of popular diets that promise to be best for weight loss. Low carbohydrates diets are among some of the most common and yet highly debated. These diets can result in rapid weight loss, which for many is a definite advantage. This quick weight loss is the result of the bodies burning fat for energy instead of the typical glycogen from carbohydrates. This tends to be a short term form of weight loss that needs to be continued through further dieting in order to be keeping the initial weight off. Consuming fat and protein tends to Increase satiety being they take longer to digest compared to the quickly digested carbohydrates. This could be an advantage in a diet plan when one is trying to lose weight.
Some disadvantages of a low carbohydrate diet can be seen in the fact that the body needs carbohydrates for energy. After being on a diet that limits this energy source, one could begin to lack energy and feel lethargic, despite the amount of fat and protein that is being consumed. Additionally, higher fat foods tend to have increased levels of cholesterol, which can lead to head disease and other negative health effects. Also, when an essential food group is eliminated from the diet, the body could become depraved of certain vitamins and minerals leading to related health problems.
High protein diet: The protein content more than 30% is called as high-protein diet. The weight loss diets with high-protein Increase satiety, thermo genesis, decreases energy efficiency and maintains lean body mass. The weight loss diet should contain 20%-30% of the energy content from protein.
Most of the individuals are not harmful by high-protein diets, but consumption of protein from animals, which are rich in saturated and also cholesterol my lead to cardiovascular diseases. The high-protein diets may be risk for chronic kidney disease and the levels of proteinuria and serum creatinine should be evaluated before starting a high-protein diet.
