question from the topic "Electric Heating and Heat Dissipation Methods".
Q No.1: Explain the causes of failures of heating elements. Why high frequency is not for the dielectric heating?
one of the failure of the heating element is breaking of element or overheating of element due to overcurrent or overvoltage. This causes expansion or burning of the element. As heating is directly proportional to the square of current flowing through it when overcurrent occurs overheating of element takes place that can burn the element. Other problem with the heating element is oxidation that occurs due to the presence of air. This oxidation produces an oxide layer on the element that increases the resistivity of the element and hence affects the heating of the element.
High frequency is not used for the dielectric as the high frequency produces high induced emf and can cause further overheating due to the formation of high frequency current. It can also affect the nearby materials and produce eddy current in them and cause overheating of the material. Generally medium range of frequency is used in heating systems.
