when it comes to correlational research, what are some examples of positive and negative correlation? also, what are the the good and bad things about coreelational research, if any
In a negative correlation, the movement of the variables is in the inverse, or opposite, directions i.e. as one variable increases, the other variable decreases. For example, self-esteem and depression have a negative correlation between them.
A positive correlation means a situation in which the variables move in the same direction. Thus it means that; if one variable increases, the other also increase. For example; there is a positive correlation between the attendance of the students and the GPAs. The limitations of correlational studies are the facts that; behaviors and real life are so complicated that you rarely see a perfect correlation. Correlation does not equal causation and hence it does not tell about the causes. The positive aspect of the correlative findings is the fact that it can provide great insight as unlike experimentation, the relationship in a correlational study is observed in a more natural environment. Variables interact outside of the laboratory as there's no experimenter to control variables.
