The statistic has a value from 0 to 1: 0 = no relationship between 2 variables > .3, a significant relationship > .5, a strong relationship

b)Weakness of correlational research Explain how correlational research only describes relationships between variables. It can’t be used to test for cause and effect. Correlation doesn’t imply causation, only co-occurrence.

The correlation coefficient is a measure of the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables. Correlation coefficient formulas are used to find how strong a relationship is between data. The formulas return a value between -1 and 1, where:

  • 1 indicates a strong positive relationship. This means that for every positive increase in one variable, there is a positive increase of a fixed proportion in the other. For example, clothes sizes go up in a positive correlation with body weight.
  • -1 indicates a strong negative relationship. This means that for every positive increase in one variable, there is a negative decrease of a fixed proportion in the other. For example, the sale of winter clothes decreases in correlation with temperature.
  • A result of zero indicates no relationship at all. This means that for every increase, there no positive or negative increase is observed. The two variables share no relationship.
