What is crystal field effect? Please state that in terms of Px, Py, and Pz orbits. (Please briefly description)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Crystal field effect is a theory which explains the various properties of the various coordination compounds. It state that the degenracy of the orbitals is effected due to the surrounding cloud of electrons coming from the anionic compound. This causes the degeneracy to break, and the some set of orbitals have higher energy than others, because due to the electron cloud there will be repulsion betweent the elctrons in the cloud and the electrons in the orbitals, which causes the energy of the electrons in the orbitals to go up, and causes the degenracy to break. For example if the anionic compound comes towards the other atom in from x axis the electrons in the px orbitals of the atom will get repelled due to the oncoming cloud of electrons, and this causes the energy of the px orbital to go up, thus breaking the degeneracy of the p-orbitals. (Py and Pz orbitals will have lesser repulsion as compared to Px orbitals)
