How will you apply Juran's Quality Trilogy to improve your personal approach to studying/learning this semester? (Minimum 300 words)
Juran’s quality trilogy is an improvement cycle that was presented by Dr. Joseph M. Juran in the year 1986. It focuses on managing the quality and reducing the cost of poor quality through appropriate planning of quality into the product/process. The three managerial processes according to this approach are:
1. Quality planning (The planning methodology): Quality planning involves strategic and tactical goals that need to be developed in order to achieve quality results. Implementing this on learning should consider the activities carried out in preparation for the semester. The syllabus for all the subjects needs to be analyzed and time schedule should be framed based on the complexity of the subject. For example, If a person is weak in Mathematics more time should be given to study the subject compared to the others that are easy to study.
2. Quality control (The control methodology): Quality control involves managing the plan to prevent or correct unwanted or unexpected change and implementing additional measures in case of any uncertainties. This also involved measuring the actual performance and comparing it with the standards set to identify whether the process is going on the right track. For example, Most of the institutions will be having mock exams before the semester at regular intervals. The results obtained in those exams should be compared with the goals set and if it is less than the planned output, additional measures should be taken by allocating more time to study or by getting the support from the professors to understand the hard and confusing concepts better.
3. Quality improvement (The improvement methodology): Quality improvement involves making incremental improvements that need to be done to create planned, predictable, and managed change. Every organization needs improvement in the organization to sustain in the long term in a competitive environment. In terms of learning, even if the desired result is achieved in the semester (Example: 80% of average marks in the semester exams), a higher target should be set (Example: 90% of average marks) to perform much better in the next semester.
