Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a solid, monoprotic acid frequently used in the laboratory to standardize strong base solutions. It has the unwieldy formula of KHC8H4O4. This is often written in shorthand notation as KHP.
How many grams of KHP are needed to exactly neutralize 28.9 mL of a 0.100 M sodium hydroxide solution ?
_________grams KHC8H4O4
Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a solid, monoprotic acid frequently used in the laboratory to standardize strong base solutions. It has the unwieldy formula of KHC8H4O4. This is often written in shorthand notation as KHP.
What volume of a 0.501 M sodium
hydroxide solution is needed to exactly neutralize
3.50 grams of KHP ?
________mL sodium hydroxide
Ans 1 :
An equimolar amounts of both the reagents are used in the reaction to react completely.
Number of moles of NaOH = 0.0289 x 0.100 = 0.00289 mol
So number of moles of KHP will also be 0.00289 mol
Mass of KHP = 0.00289 x 204.22 = 0.59 grams
Ans 2 :
Number of moles of KHP = 3.50 / 204.22 = 0.0171 mol
So number of moles of NaOH also will be 0.0171 mol
Volume = Number of moles / molarity
V = 0.0171 / 0.501
= 0.0342 L
or 34.2 mL sodium hydroxide
