The difference between western psychotherapy and morita therapy are:

  • Western psychotherapy has it's root in psychoanalysis. While, morita therapy is rooted in zen philosophy of buddhism and is practiced in Japan.
  • Western psychotherapy involves a logical and rational approach. While, morita therapy involves a religious and philosophical approach.
  • Western psychotherapy the therapy to inner conflicts of the self of the individual. Whereas, morita therapy involves healing of the conflicts in social interactions and bonding.
  • Western psychotherapy encourages talking of the issues that the individual wants the healing while introsoecting it. While, in morita therapy, the individuals who seeks healing are required to introspect their issues by being virtually alone in a room for a week during which they only have contact with the therapist who occasionally visits them everyday.
  • Western psychotherapy attempts to resolve the inner conflicts of the self of the individual symptomatically. Whereas, morita therapy involves the acceptance of the limits at personal level, and tries to differentiate the feelings from behaviors.
