1. Describe two mechanisms by which regulatory T cells can prevent helper T cells from becoming activated.
2. A poison ivy rash is the result of a hypersensitivity reaction. What type of hypersensitivity reaction is this, and how is it generated?
2: poison ivy rash causes contact dermatitis reactions mediated by TH1 cells. In poison ivy a pentadecacatechol compound from the leaves of the plant forms a complex with skin proteins. When TH cells react with this compound appropriately displayed by local antigen presenting cells, they differentiate into sensitized TH 1 cells. The activation of cells indice cytokine production. The cutokines causes macrophages to accumulate at the site. Activation of these macrophages and release lytic enzymes result in the redness and pustules that characterize a reaction to poison ivy.
