If person P is three times as old as his son. Also, five years from now he will be two and a half times as old as his son. How old is P and how old is P's son?
Solution:
If x & y are respective ages of P and his son. Then from question:
x = 3y - Eq. I
Five years from now, from question relation will be:
x+5 = 2 . 1/2 (y+5)
x+5 = 5/2 (y+5)
2 (x+5) = 5(y+5)
2x+10 = 5y+25
2x - 5y = 25-10
2x - 5y = 15 - Eq. II
Substitute value of x from Eq. I in Eq. II
2(3y) - 5y = 15
6y - 5y = 15
y = 15
Substitute y = 15 in Eq. I
x = 3(15) = 45
So, P is 45 years old and his son is 15.
P is 45 years old and his son is 15.
