The New Mexico Public Accountancy Board regulates the process for becoming certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New Mexico. Requirements to become CPA in New Mexico are following:

  • Candidate must complete at least 150 semester hours of college education that includes bachelor’s degree
  • Candidate must earn related experience ( at least 1 year of experience)
  • Candidate must pass Uniform CPA Examination within an 18-month rolling period
  • Candidate must pass AICPA ethics course and exam to fulfill ethics requirements for CPA
  • Candidate must complete a criminal background check
  • After completing all the above mentioned process candidate can apply for a license

Texas State Board of Public Accountancy regulates process for becoming certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Texas. Requirements to become CPA in Texas are following:

  • Candidate must complete at least 150 semester hours of college education that includes bachelor’s degree or a higher degree
  • Candidate must submit the Application of Intent Package to sit for the Uniform CPA Exam
  • Candidate must complete the FAST fingerprint background check
  • Candidate must pass Uniform CPA Examination within an 18-month rolling period
  • Candidate must earn related experience ( 1 year of experience for master’s degree holders and 2 year of experience for others)
  • Candidate must pass AICPA ethics course and exam
  • After completing all the above mentioned process candidate can apply for a license

By comparing both the process we can say that most of the requirements are same in both states (Texas and New Mexico) like 150 semester hours, Uniform CPA Examination within an 18-month rolling period, AICPA ethics course and exam and licenses. Difference between both the process are required experience as in New Mexico its minimum 1 year where as in Texas its 2 year for master degree holders and 1 year for others.
