The transfer of the genetic material in the bacteria is possible by the help of conjugation. In conjugation a part of desired gene is transferred from donor bacteria to the receptient bacteria. It is a cell to cell contact between two bacterias which occurs through the donation of pilli( singular pillus). Let us take an example of conjugation in E-coli. There is an strain Hfr stain means desired gene (high frequency recombinant) is transferred or F- through the plasmid. Those cell which don't have plasmid will be called F-(recipient) and which have called F+.

  1. The Hfr cell acts as a donor and F- acts as a recipient when Hfr transfer it's it's genome in F- through pilli it can not tranfer all of its DNA to the host cell because it lost the touch to the F- strain due to higher size and no homologous recombination occured which means entire genome is not tranferred. It entire genome gets transferred it will become Hfr.

​​​​​​Since not all the DNA is tranferred from HFr to F- the F- will remain remain as F-.
