Select one of the three scenarios and describe how you would use a systematic sample to select the sample. Write your answers in complete sentences. 2-4 sentences should suffice.
1) A group of scientists would like to determine if a new drug shrinks spleen tumors in mice. In order to do this, they select 150 mice and measure the size of their spleen tumors. Then they administer the drug. Then, they measure the size of the spleen tumors afterward.
2. You are watching a group of children run relay races. You would like to determine the speed of that the children run. You select 30 children and time them in their relay races.
3. You would like to know how many people were watching the NBA Finals in 2010. You call 2150 people at random and asked them if they saw the NBA Finals.
(1)
Step 1: Given: Sample Size = Number of mice to be selected for the sample = 150
Step 2: Let N be the total population size of all mice available for sampling.
Step 3: Mark each mice starting from serial number 1 to N
Step 4: Start from a random starting point. say, 5. Then the mice with serial number 5 is selected for the sample. Continuue this with periodic interval, say 10. So, next mice selected is with serialnumber 15.
Step 5: Continue the same till 150 mice are selected.
(2)
Step 1: Given: Sample Size = Number of children to be selected for the sample = 30
Step 2: Let N be the total population size of all children available for sampling.
Step 3: Mark each child starting from serial number 1 to N
Step 4: Start from a random starting point. say, 5. Then the child with serial number 5 is selected for the sample. Continuue this with periodic interval, say 10. So, next child selected is with serial number 15.
Step 5: Continue the same till 30 children are selected.
(3)
Step 1: Given: Sample Size = Number of people to be selected for the sample = 2150
Step 2: Let N be the total population size of all people available for sampling.
Step 3: Mark each person starting from serial number 1 to N
Step 4: Start from a random starting point. say, 5. Then the person with serial number 5 is selected for the sample. Continuue this with periodic interval, say 10. So, next person selected is with serial number 15.
Step 5: Continue the same till 2150 people are selected.
