Point charges of 9.00 nC are situated at each of three corners of a square whose side is 0.450 m .

a. What is the magnitude of the resultant force on a point charge of -4.00 μC if it is placed at the center of the square?

b. What is the magnitude of the resultant force on a point charge of -4.00 μC if it is placed at the vacant corner of the square?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The force due to A will get canceled by force due to C, so net force will be due to B

F = 3.2 X 10-3 N

b)

The forces on charge at D is as shown

The force due to C (Fc) and force due to A(will be same as they have same charge and distance

FA = 1.6 X 10-3 N

SInce the two forces F A and FB are same in magnitude their resultant will be along the bisector i.e the diagonal .

F = 2.26 X 10-3 N

The force due to B(FB )

FB = 8 X 10-4 N

The resultant of F A and FC will be in same direction as FB

so

Fnet = F + FB = 2.26 X 10-3 + 8 X 10-4

Fnet = 3.06 X 10-3 N
