The biomedical engineering department in the hospital has been asked to calibrate the pulmonary function equipment. It helps to understand the major tests that will be conducted. Correctly match these pulmonary function tests with their description.

Place letter from column B that best fits the description

Column A

Column B

1.         Total Lung Capacity (TLC)

A. The amount of air that the lungs can expel after having been filled completely representing the change in volume from completely emptied lungs to completely filled lungs. It is the sum of all volumes except residual volume

2.         Vital capacity (VC)

B. Maximum volume of air that the lungs can hold. In a healthy adult up to 5 to 6 litres.

3.         Residual volume (RV)

C. The amount of air a person inhales during a normal breath. The volume of air displaced between normal inspiration and expiration (about 500 millilitres in a healthy adult)

4.         Tidal volume (TV or VT)

D. The amount of air left in the lungs if you exhale as much air as possible. Your lungs would feel totally empty.

Expert Solution

Lung capacity varies based on the activities. The lung capacity is calculated from the lung volume. The lung capacity changes due to respiratory disease, gender and age.Lung capacity is calculated by adding the various lungs volume.

Tidal volume- The amount of air a person inhales during a normal breath or the volume of air displace between normal inspiration and expiration. It is 500ml in healthy individual.

Residual volume-The volume of air remaining in the lungs after exhaling as much air as possible your lungs would feel empty. The residual volume in lungs is 1200ml. The lungs are never emptied completely even after a maximal exhalation because if there is no air then the lung tissue would stick to one another.

Vital capacity- Amount of air that the lungs can expel after having been filled completely representing the change in volume from completely emptied lungs to completely filled lungs. It is the sum of all volumes except residual volume. It includes IC(Inspiration capacity calculated by TV+ IRV)+ERV. Its value is 4 litre in normal human lungs.Vital capacity is used for checking the deep breathing.

Total lung capacity-Total amount of air that lungs can hold. Its value ranges from 5 to 6 litre in a healthy individual. It includes IC+ERV+RV.
