A solution is made by combining 15.0 mL of 16.5 M acetic acid with 5.50 g of sodium acetate and diluting to a total volume of 1.50 L.

Calculate the pH of the solution.

Solutions

Expert Solution

no of moles of CH3COOH   = molarity * volume in L

                                              = 16.5*0.015   = 0.2475 moles

no of moles of CH3COONa    = W/G.M.Wt    = 5.5/82   = 0.067 moles

concentration of acetic acid   = no of moles/volume in L    = 0.2475/1.5   = 0.165M

concentration of sodium acetate = no of moles/volume in L    = 0.067/1.5 = 0.0446M

PH   = Pka + log[CH3COONa]/[CH3COOH]

        = 4.75 + log0.0446/0.165

         = 4.75-0.5681

           = 4.1819 >>>>>answer
