Solutions

Expert Solution

Difference between covalent and Ionic bonds,

Covalent bonds involve the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms; ionic bonds involve the sharing of single electrons between atoms.

Electrons of an atom is organized into shells. Each shell consists of sub-shells according to their size. There are 4 sub-shell type,  s,p,d and f.

s ,p,d,f sub-shells can hold 1,3, 5, 7 pairs of electrons respectively.

So each shell is made up of sub-shells in a combination of,

Shell 1 (K) s = 2 electrons

Shell 2(L) s+p= 2+6 =8 electrons

Shell 3(M) s+p+d = 2+6+10 = 18 electrons

Shell 4(N) s+p+d+f = 2+6+10+14 = 32 electrons

So an atom with 8 electrons at outer shell will fill s+p sub-shell and become stable.

Atom which contains 8 electrons at the outer shell tend to be stable and chemically nonreactive or inert.

Orange juice has pH of 3 and black coffee has pH of 5 means Orange juice has 100 times more H+ions than Black coffee.

pH is the potential of hydrogen. It is the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration in a solution. Low pH means high acidity . pH 3 is 100 times acidic than pH 5.

Each hydrogen atom has a partial positive charge; the nitrogen atom has a partial negative charge.

Atomic number is best described as The number of Protons in atom.

When two atoms are equally electronegative, they will interact to form Nonpolar covalent bonds.

Because they have same electronegativity so they will share their valance electrons equally with each other. Thus forming Nonpolar covalent bond.

The atomic number of Neon is 10.. Therefore the most correct statement about Neon is It has 8 electrons at its outer electron shell and it is inert.

2 electrons at the K shell and 2+6=8 electrons at L shell.
