What is the relationship between the following?:

The following systems are rated from fastest to slowest for rate of ATP production:

1. ATP-PCr System
2.
Glycolysis (Lactic Acid System) ,
3.Oxidative Metabolism (Lipids and/or Carbohydrates)

The following systems are rated from largest to smallest for volume of ATP production:
1.Glycolysis (Lactic Acid System),
2.Oxidative Metabolism (Lipids and/or Carbohydrates)
3.
ATP-PCr System

Solutions

Expert Solution

I. Rate of ATP production-

1. ATP- PCr system

2. Glycolysis ( lactic acid system)

3. Oxidative metabolism ( Lipids and /or carbohydrates)

Since ATP- PTC system consists of adenosine triphosphate and phosphocreatine, it provides immediate energy by breaking down these energy molecules. It provides energy quicker than any other system because regardless of intensity, it breaks down the high yield molecules. It requires 1 to 5 seconds for one cycle completion.

Lactic acid fermentation or simply glycolysis is the process of production of energy from pyruvate without the use of oxygen. Here pyruvate is converted to lactate which readily dissociates and produces energy. It uses 5 to 15 seconds for each cycle.

In oxidative metabolism, oxygen is required in the production of energy and this is a longer taking process where pyruvate is converted to ATP. Pyruvate enters mitochondria and oxidised in Krebs cycle. It is time requiring process. It uses greater than 75 seconds for one cycle.

II. Volume of ATP production-

1.Oxidative metabolism (Lipids and /or fats)

2. Glycolysis ( Lactic acid fermentation)

3. ATP- PCr system

In oxidative metabolism where carbohydrates or fats are utilised for the production of ATP, from the complete oxidation of one glucose molecule to CO2 produces 38 or 36 ATP and triglyceride molecule produces 441 ATP.

In lactic acid fermentation or anerobic energy pathway where glycolysis is the only pathway as there is no Krebs cycle, produces less ATP than oxidative metabolism which is net 2-3 ATP for each glucose molecule.

In ATP PC system the amount of energy production is least which is 0.7 ATP for each PC molecule.
