Describe the study Pozzulo and Dempsey (2006) conducted on lineup instructions and the conclusions that can be drawn from this study.
In this study, the experiments were conducted in order to understand the effect that pressure has on decision lineup across both adult as well as child eye witnesses. Here, both adults and children had been shown a video that was of a staged crime after they had seen the video, these participants were asked to identify the criminal from the lineup. Even before they could view the lineup, participants had been randomly distributed to one of the conditions. In one of the conditions, the participants had been given unbiased instructions and were said that the criminal could be or could be not be in the lineup, whereas, in the second condition, the participants had been convinced that the criminal is there in the lineup. It was observed that, when participants had been given biased instructions, chose someone as the criminal from the lineup in 75% of the cases. Also, when neutral instruction were given, this percentage only came down to 50% if the times, whereas, it was observed that the children did not make this error.
