Expert Solution

Human Average heart beat rate is about 72/min.

Explanation :

Heart beat can be defined as the number of times your heart beats in one minute. It is also known as pulse.

The normal heart beat range is about 60 - 100/min.

It vary from person to person and according to age.

Normal heart rates at rest:

  • Children (ages 6 - 15) 70 – 100 beats per minute
  • Adults (age 18 and over) 60 – 100 beats per minute

Exercises, emotions, anemia, an overactive thyroid, fever, and some medication intake can cause your heart to beat faster.

One can measure the pulse, from your wrist by palpating the radial artery in your wrist. This is because Radial artery is located at the surface of wrist. The radial artery supplies the arm and hand with oxygenated blood from the lungs.

Steps to measure pulse from radial artery -

  • Place the tips of your index, second and third fingers on the palm side of your other wrist below the base of the thumb.
  • Press the index and throd finger little tighther than the middle finger. This way you can feel the blood pulsating beneath the arteries.
  • Index and the their finger is used to create pressure and the middle finger is used to palpate the blood pulsating beneath.
  • Count the pulsation for 10seconds. Multiply this number with 6 to get your heart rate per minute.

Formula for heart rate -- No. of beats in 10sec × 6

Or

Heart rate = no of beats in 15 sec × 4

There are many factors which can alter your heart rate, they can be -

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Fitness and activity levels
  • Being a smoker
  • Having cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol or diabetes
  • Air temperature
  • Body position (standing up or lying down)
  • Emotions
  • Body size
  • Medications
