Client Profile:

A.G. is a 70-year-old African American female. She was seen in her eye doctor’s office for routine eye examination. Her last examo was 5 years ago.

Subjective Assessment Data:

  • Has no current ocular complaints
  • Has not kept her annually scheduled examinations because her eyes have not bothered her.
  • Takes metoprolol (Lopressor) for hypertension.

Objective Assessment Data:

  • BP: 130/78
  • HR: 72bpm
  • Medical History: Diabetes, Atherosclerosis

Ophthalmic Examination:

  • Visual acuity: Left eye (OD)=20/20, Right eye (OS)=20/20
  • Intraocular pressure: OD=25, OS=28; by Tonometry
  • Loss of peripheral vision noted in both eyes OU)
  • Diagnosis from Exam: Early Chronic Open-Angle Glaucoma both eyes (OU).
  • Treatment plan is timoptic (timolol).

Discuss and answer the following questions.

  1. What should the nurse teach A. G. about administering the eye drops?

  1. Will A.G. be able to discontinue her eye drops once her intraocular pressures are within normal range? Explain your answer:

A.G shouldn't have taken this lightly and should have met  an opthalmologist every year because she has hypertension and consumes the drug metaprolol , she's hypertensive, and along with it she has diabetics and atheroscleroisis too.
Her treatment plan is timoptic it is a medicine used as eye drops used to treat increased pressure inside eyes such as in ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

TimopticSolution is available in concentrations of 0.25 and 0.5%. The usual starting dose is one drop of 0.25% TIMOPTIC in the affected eye twice a day.


Will A.G. be able to discontinue her eye drops once her intraocular pressures are within normal range?

Yes , She will be able to discontinue her eye drops once her intraocular pressures are in normal range because ones the medication works and she is cured she doesnt have to use it.
