A closed loop overhead conveyor must be designed to deliver parts from a load station to an unload station. The specified flow rate of parts between the two stations is 320 parts/hr. The conveyor has carriers spaced at a center-to-center distance that is to be determined. Each carrier holds one part. Forward and return loops are each 75 m. Conveyor speed is 0.6 m/s. Minimum feasible times to load and unload parts at the respective stations is 0.16 min for each. Does the system achieve the specified flow rate? If so, what are appropriate values for the number of carriers and the spacing between carriers?

An FMS consists of three stations plus a load/unload station. Station 1 loads and unloads parts using two servers (material handling workers). Station 2 performs horizontal milling operations with two servers (identical CNC horizontal milling machines). Station 3 performs vertical milling operations with three servers (identical CNC vertical milling machines). Station 4 performs drilling operations with two servers (identical drill presses). The machines are connected by a part handling system that has two work carriers and a mean transport time...

JBL Co. has designed a new conveyor system. Management must choose among the three alternative courses of actions : (1) The firm can sell the design outright to another corporation with payment over two years (2) It can license the design to another manufacturer for a period of 5 years, it it likely product life. (3) It can manufacture and market the system itself; this alternative will result in 6 years of cash inflows. The company has a cost of...

Suppose a workstation receives parts automatically from a conveyor. An accumulation line has been provided at the workstation and has a storage capacity for 5 parts (N=6). Parts arrive randomly at the switching junction for the workstation; if the accumulation line is full, parts are diverted to another workstation. Parts arrive at a Poisson rate of 1 per minute; service time at the workstation is exponentially distributed with a mean of 45 seconds. a. What is the rate at which...
