Solutions

Expert Solution

1)a.A thermodynamic system is a definite macroscopic region or space in the universe in which one or more thermodynamic processes take place.Everything external to this is called as sorroundings. There are two types of system , one is open system and other is closed system.

b.Control mass system:Basically it represents a closed system. In control mass system it may be energy transfer between system and sorroundings but mass must be identical of the system.Example is cyliner piston in which only energy in the form of heat and work take place.

Control Voulme:Basically it is a open system. In this system there has no identity of mass of the system but here volume is constant of the system nothing much in control volume system. The system mostly used in fluid engineering is a control vilume system. Here also energy transfer take place.Example is flow through a turbine in which both energy and mass transfer take plce.

The mass balance for a control volume can be defined as any change of mass within the control volume is equal to the net gain of mass flowing into the volume through the control surface.
