Solutions

Expert Solution

Given Equation:

__e +__H+(aq) +__Cr2O72–(aq)   -----> __Cr3+(aq) +__H2O(l)

1) Balance Chromium:

__Cr2O72–(aq)   ----->  __Cr3+(aq)

Cr2O72–(aq)   -----> 2Cr3+(aq)

2) Balance Oxygen:

__Cr2O72–(aq)   ----->  __Cr3+(aq) +__H2O(l)

Cr2O72–(aq)   -----> 2Cr3+(aq) + 7H2O(l)

3) Balance Hydrogen:

__H+(aq) +__Cr2O72–(aq)   ----->  __Cr3+(aq) +__H2O(l)

14H+(aq) + Cr2O72–(aq)   -----> 2Cr3+(aq) + 7H2O(l)

4) Balance Charge:

__e +__H+(aq) +__Cr2O72–(aq)   ----->  __Cr3+(aq) +__H2O(l)

6e + 14H+(aq) + Cr2O72–(aq)   -----> 2Cr3+(aq) + 7H2O(l)

Therefore, the sum of the stoichiometric coefficients are: 6 + 14 + 1 + 2 + 7 = 30

Answer: D. 30
